3 Windhoek   B/L

Day 1: Windhoek to Sesriem (400km)(Namib Desert Lodge or similar)

Collection time is between 08:00 and 08:30 from anywhere within Windhoek. Windhoek is surrounded by mountains and we pass first over the Eros Mountains and then over the Khomas Hochland Range. As we come through the mountains we drop down from the central Namibian plateau to grassy desert savannah. We stop at Solitaire for petrol and perhaps also afternoon tea before we continue to our first night at the Namib Desert Lodge. We aim to arrive during the late afternoon.

Day 2: Sesriem and Sossusvlei (Namib Desert Lodge or similar)

Early start to catch the soft light of the sunrise over the desert. After passing through Sesriem we continue towards Sossusvlei with sand dunes along both sides of the road. We will stop at the famous Dune 45.

Those who feel fit may climb the dune and get a breathtaking view of the surrounding Namibian desert. After breakfast we will take a desert walk in the cool of the morning, with the chance of seeing gemsboks, springboks, black-backed jackals and ostriches.

As the day cools down we will go on a short excursion to Sesriem Canyon before heading back.

Drive through dunes

Day 3: Lodge to Windhoek (350km)

Early start and back to civilisation on scenic roads through the Khomas Hochland Mountain Range. We will arrive back in the city in the afternoon and you will be dropped off at your accommodation on our return.

Sesriem Canyon

Sossulsvlei is situated in the largest conservation area in Africa - the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Sossusvlei itself is a large, white salt and clay pan surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world. This dramatic setting makes it a photographers dream with massive dunes rising up on either side of the road, shifting colours, amazing contrasts, spectacular sunsets and vivid star filled skies.

Although not an area rich in game, a wide variety of Namibian plants and animals have adapted to survive this harsh environment and the sight of the larger game silhoetted against this vast, stark landscape is a beautiful sight to behold. Larger Namibian game most commonly seen include springbok, oryx and ostrich.

Another attraction in the area is Dead Vlei,a clay pan characterised by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The trees are estimated to be approximately 900 years old, however they have not decomposed due to the dry climate. The surreal nature and beautiful contrast of the scene make this a favourite spot for photographers visiting Namibia.

Sesriem Canyon is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab rivier in the local sedimentary rock. It is about a kilometre long and up to 30 meters deep. The Sesriem Canyon is only two metres (6.5 feet) wide in some places, and has a portion that permanently contains water, which many animals use. The canyons interesting rock formations make it a fun place to explore.

A visit to the Namib Desert is definitely top on the list of one of the most amazing things to do while in Namibia.
